You know what the 4th of July weekend means to you and your family. To me, it always announces another meeting with the people of the Gulf Coast Regional Center. Every year, FM Houston helps them put on the Rock For Life Blood Drive. This year, it goes through July 31st and until that date, everyone who gives a pint of blood gets the new special edition T-shirt for free:
You can also participate in the live broadcast that my friend Steve Fixx is putting on. Just show up Thursday, July 3 at First Colony Mall. Steve will be there from 3-6 PM. You won’t be able to miss the radio team from The Arrow.
The Blood Center will also be hosting the blood drive all over town in malls and cinemas. So when you take your kids to see Wall-E, you can teach them an important lesson about giving back to society, helping your neighbor… who knows? They might listen and turn out to be grown-ups who do the same with their kids.

And remember, if you can’t make it to Steve’s broadcast or any of the other location, you can still donate blood and get the T-shirt through July 31st. Just contact the Blood Center, schedule your donation at a time convenient to you and tell them you want it credited to the Rock For Life Blood Drive. It’ll be a done deal.
This weekend’s show is predictably all about the blood drive. The lovely Courtney Johnson returns to FM Houston with Dr. Susan Rossmann who is their chief medical officer. It’s another interview I am very proud of and you can hear it now by clicking here.
I also want to note that the FDA has recently lifted some restrictions limiting people who were treated for various cancers from giving blood. The Blood Center’s site has all the info.
Have a safe 4th of July weekend, mes amis. Please think of picking a designated driver when you get the booze. And don’t poor lighter fluid on your pants. That’s stupid. If done next to an open flame, it’s stupid, painful, and possibly deadly like driving drunk.

Next Friday, June 20th, how about riding your bycicle down Memorial Drive, at night with the Houston Police Department? I'm talking about a police escort with the lights on and everything. It’s from 9 PM to Midnight and they're all meeting at the Downtown Aquarium. It’s that big bright blue thing you can’t miss if you go downtown. It’s more noticeable than a SWAT truck parked in your driveway but they’re going to park one in theirs, just in case. There will also be a helicopter, more big police toys and all around, crawling through them, kids, moms, dads, all having fun with a bunch of off duty Cops. You can bring your family if you want.

I went on a "Civilian Ride-Along" with a member of “The Rock”, HPD’s Northeast station in March. Spending a Friday night with Sergeant Barnes on her beat was an eye opening experience. It what you would call Serious fun with a capital "S" because all the professionals I met that night were nice, cool, and funny.
I have been wanting to record a show to talk about the experience for a while, so for this instalment of FM Houston, Assistant chief Vicky King and assistant chief Brian Lumpkin took the guest mics and told me about what they do for a living. We also talk about the Moonlight Classic Bike Ride and why people are planning to ride the ferris wheel for free. You can too, if you come and take part in the ride. Bring the family, they're invited too.
