The Russian Soyuz TMA-13 spacecraft lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on the Kazakh. Richard Garriott's father, a former NASA astronaut was there to wave his son off. Garriott paid 35 million dollars for the opportunity to go into space.

Accompanying him on the trip is U.S astronaut Michael Fincke and Russian cosmonaut Yury Lonchakev.

And it seems that space travel runs in the family, as Garriott's father, a former astronaut watched his sun blast off.

"Things have gone well and smoothly, a beautiful day and nice to have successful launch as we did,” Owen Garriott said. Space officials said the rocket has reached orbit safely, and will dock in the International Space Station in two days.

Garriott will spend 10 days in space, returning to earth in a three-person capsule.
